Are PFOA And PFOS Contaminants In Your Water?

Perfluorooctane Sulfonate (PFOS) and Perfluorooctanoic Acid (PFOA) are fluorinated organic chemicals. These water and lipid-resistant synthetic compounds are used as a coating on fabrics and leathers, in fire resistant foams, in the production of stain-repellent carpeting, and can be found among other items. PFOA and PFOS are also used to make the coating on non-stick cookware, to create household cleaning products, and to produce pesticides.

These Perfluorochemicals (PFC’s) have been deposited into our soil, have polluted our air and have leached into water supplies. PFOA and PFOS are a concern for our health and our environment because of their long-lasting effects. Their strong, stable molecular structure means these chemicals take longer to breakdown naturally.

Some of the side effects to drinking water contaminated with PFOA and PFOS include reproductive health issues, developmental delays, cardiovascular concerns and other health problems.
