Water softener

A water softener is a system that reduces water hardness, which is caused by dissolved calcium and magnesium, throughout the home. It works through ion exchange, in which calcium and magnesium ions are exchanged for sodium or potassium ions held on a specialized resin. The resin is periodically regenerated using sodium chloride or potassium chloride (softening salt). It is categorized separately from a filter under industry standards (softeners are certified to NSF/ANSI 44).

Salt-free water conditioner

A salt-free water conditioner treats the effects of hard water without ion exchange and without adding salt. It conditions minerals to reduce scale buildup rather than removing them, so it is distinct from an ion-exchange softener.

Reverse osmosis (RO) drinking water system

A reverse osmosis (RO) drinking water system is a point-of-use filtration system. It’s often installed under the sink for a kitchen faucet, but it can be connected to multiple devices, including a dedicated faucet, refrigerator, icemaker and other water dispensing systems. It uses water pressure to force water through a semi-permeable membrane, which separates treated water (called permeate) from concentrated wastewater (called concentrate or reject water). A whole home water filter is a point-of-entry system installed at or near where the main water supply enters the home, treating water for all fixtures. Point-of-entry systems are commonly used to reduce sediment, chlorine, iron, hydrogen sulfide and other contaminants, depending on the treatment technology. Some specialized systems are also designed to reduce contaminants such as arsenic, nitrate or PFAS.
